Reading Minutes Update!

If you have been following the blog, you know that Room 12 has a challenge they are trying to meet. Each year, I challenge my class to read 200,000 minutes outside of class (30 minutes each day, 6 days a week, EVERY week of the school year). None of my previous classes met the goal until last year, and I spent a night on the roof of the school as "reward" for their hard work.

There has been some discussion about what the students would like me to do this year if they meet their goal. Unfortunately (for me) the conversation most recently has shifted away from sleeping on the roof to...Kool Aid Dunk Tank. Not sure how I feel about that one. We'll keep you posted.

Each Monday, we collect the total reading minutes for the previous week. The most recent total of all their reading minutes combined is...

Congratulations, Super Readers. You're getting close.

  1. Hi Mr. Pahl,
It looks like they have about 60 more reading days to read 41,245 minutes. That's 687 minutes per day. I'm not sure how many kids you have but assuming 25, they are down to less than 30 minutes per kid per day.

Great work class! Hopefully, they're thinking warm KoolAid :)

    1. Dear Matt,
There are 29 kids in are class. And you are right that we still have 41,245 minutes left. But I disagree about having the reward being warm KoolAid. I think it should be green KoolAid because if it were that, when we finished dumping it on Mr. Pahl he would smell really good! Please reply to this reply so we can scheme other ideas.
      Hoping for a reply, Gavin

    2. Dear Matt,
We actually have about 30 kids in our class. Also, I’m thinking about the Kool-Aid dunk tank. I’m thinking between cherry or blueberry, whatever stains the most. Matt, what do you think? Cherry Kool-Aid or blueberry? I’m thinking blueberry because its blue which is a school color.
      Sincerely,
      Sophia

    3. Hi Dad,
What other crazy ideas have you come up with since you put this comment up? I half to say that I really like the idea of the warm cool aid. But where are you going to get all the cool aid?
Hope you came up with some crazy ideas,
      Phoebe

  5. Such a cool idea!! I can't believe that you slept on the roof last year, but it must have given them enough motivation. I think that the kool aid dunk tank would be fantastic, you might be stained the color red for a couple of days but seems well worth it!

  6. Hello Room 12!

After watching your video and seeing everything on your blog I can see that you are all very busy using and learning about technology. I wanted to know what your favorite type of technology is? I am also very excited for you all to dunk your teacher. I have a good feeling you will meet your goal! Keep it up!

    1. Dear Avery,
I want our teacher to be dipped in both colors of Kool-Aid swirled together, so both of everyone's favorite flavors are used. What do you think we should do for the 158,755 minutes that we read? Why or why not?
      Sincerely,Fiona

  12. Dear Mr. Pahl,
I think we are definitely going to reach our goal and you’ll end up soaked in cool-aid. And I agree with Alexa you probably will end up stained red, green or blue for a few days.
    Sincerely, Ella
