Will They Reach Their Goal?

Each year, I challenge my class to read a combined 200,000 minutes between September and early June. That's a minimum of 30 minutes each night, weekends, holidays, and breaks included. Last year was the first time a class reached that goal. Our wager was that I would spend a night on the roof of the school if they met their goal.

Well...

I am a little late getting it on the blog, but so far this year, the students in room 12 have read

Custom Glitter Text

It's looking pretty good for them as we are just passed the half way point in the year. What do you think I should for the class if they meet their goal of reading 200,000 minutes?

  • Sleep on the roof AGAIN?
  • Shave the hair off my head, arms, and legs?
  • Wear a dress to school?
  • Ride my bike 100 miles through the streets of Bellingham pulling a sign that tells of their amazing feat?
Or do YOU have a different idea?

Please comment and share what you think. We'll make a Google Form later in the year and allow you to vote. The crazy (and hopefully not too painful) idea with the most votes is what I will do for my students if they reach the goal of reading 200,000 minutes for the year.

Happy Reading!

    2. Dear Mr. Pahl,
You were lucky that it didn’t rain but it was getting close to summer so it probably wouldn’t.
      Sincerely,

  2. Dear Mr. Pahl,
I think that riding a bike through town would be really cool mostly because it is the most “mellow” choice. So I “vote” that one.

    2. Dear Mr. Pahl,
Riding a bike around town is actually very safe compared Gavin’s suggestion to go skiing at Table Mountain. Think about it, isn’t biking around town safer than skiing on a colossal mountain? Anyways, Happy blogging!

    3. Dear Linnea,
I agree, biking 100 miles would be kind of mellow but don’t you think swimming the Atlantic Ocean would be even mellower? By the way do you know if Mr. Pahl knows how to swim? Happy blogging!

  3. Dear Mr. Pahl,
It’s cool that we made it past half of the amount that we need to accomplish this. I hope we can do it!

    1. Hi Sophia,

I think it's cool, too, mostly because I think reading is so wonderful. Don't you agree? I hope you reach your goal as well. It's no small feat!

      Sincerely,
      Mr. Pahl

    2. Dear Sophia, I think we will make it to about 1,000,000 minutes if we read long enough for the whole 180 days of the school year! I also agree that reading is very wonderful and adventurous; do you guess the other classmates think so? I love to read new books and see what they are about, because when I was 5 years old, I loved to read The Big Red Barn for so many months, and I think other books may be just as wonderful! So Sophia and classmates, what is your most favorite book you ever read in the history of your life? How many minutes would you like to read your favorite book? (I don’t have a favorite book because I loved so many books in my life.)

    3. Dear Fiona,
I don't think I have a favorite book because a have seen a ton of spectacular books, but I will tell you one I enjoyed. The 68 Rooms is about two kids named Jack and Ruthie who can go inside paintings in the Thorne Rooms. Also if you ever plan on reading it I hope you enjoy it. Happy blogging and hope we make it to 200,000 minutes!
      Sincerely,
      Sophia

  4. Dear Class,
I think if room12 reaches their goal Mr. Pahl should have to go ski Table Mountain! For those of you that don’t know what Table Mountain is it is a mountain close to Mt. Baker. Happy bloging!

    1. Hey Gavin!

Shouldn't I know how to ski first? Isn't skiing Table Mountain dangerous? What are you trying to do to me?

      Anxiously awaiting your reply.

    2. Dear Mr. Pahl,
You are right table mountain is dangerous. You also might want to know to ski before you ski it or you could just roll down it. But if you rolled down it it could be extremely painful. The reasons I thought this could be a cool stunt for you to do if we reached our goal are, I like to ski, I thought it would be an interesting stunt, and I might ski Table Mountain soon so I wanted to see how it went for you. But I guess I should chose a new challenge, my new challenge to you is to swim across the Atlantic Ocean! I hope I have answered all your questions. Happy blogging!

I think you should wear a dress and make up to school for a day because I think everyone would think it would be SUPPER FUNNY.

    2. Dear Mr. Pahl,
Last year when your class read so much and you sleep in the roof do you get cold during at night time? Do you get the shivers?

      Delete
    3. Dear Mr. Pahl, no one will make fun of you, and I thought you loved to be funny for the kids at school. If you don’t want to wear a dress, wear a boyish version of a skirt called a kilt. Or you could wear a long African shirt. Ella thought you would like the dress idea, and remember, don’t be embarrassed, just be happy at your students’ votes!

    4. Dear Ella,
That would be fun to see Mr. Pahl in a dress and Makeup. But I bet it would be hard to pay attention without laughing. Also I don’t think I can take Mr. Pahl seriously wearing makeup and a dress on.

    5. Dear Rhiannon,
I agree with you and Ella. It woud be so hard to pay attention if Mr. Pahl were a dress and makeup. But I don't think Mr. Pahl woud go over board and wear makeup to school. What do you think?

  8. Dear Mr. Pahl,
I quite like the idea of you riding through the streets on your bicycle pulling a sign. This would let the whole town know what an amazing feat your kids accomplished. More spectacularly, if you rode 100 miles around town wearing a clown suite and a big red nose, that would really draw attention to their accomplishment.
    Yours Truly,
    Matt (Phoebe's dad)

  9. Dear Matt,
That is the best idea EVER. I wonder how long it would take for Mr.Pahl to ride 100 miles around town. He would look so funny! I hope we make the goal so Mr.Pahl can do it.

  15. Dear classmates, do you agree that Mr. Pahl will actually sleep on the roof? This is very suspenseful! Will we get to 200,000 minutes of reading? Or will we be stuck with 150,000? What do you think? This could get dramatic!
