Coast Salish Traditional Art

We continue to be very fortunate to have Mrs. Heywood and Jo visit our classroom. This time they taught us about the Coast Salish art form. We expanded our study of salmon to include its use in the Pacific Northwest Native American culture.

This link gives a rich and detailed explanation of some of the concepts, shapes and symbols our students learned. Scroll down to page 20 to read about salmon.

Below you'll find an Animoto of the students' learning and work process, followed by a Kizoa of their finished products.

Well, what do you think?

What is something you learned from doing this project with Mrs. Heywood and Jo?

Has learning about the shapes and symbols used by Pacific Northwest Native Americans affected how you look at their art and cultural artifacts in our community?

  4. Dear Mr. Pahl,
It was very fun making these because I thought trying a new kind of art instead of the art we normally do is really fun. Can we do more of this kind of thing?

    1. Dear Sophia,
You're welcome. I am glad you are getting so much art this year. Art is really important. We are lucky to have Mrs. Heywood, Jo, and Ms. Avera who know art so well. Yes, we will have art at least once a week for the remainder of the year.

    3. Dear Sophia,

I agree your to what you think. Drawing different art makes it fun instead of drawing American drawings all the time. I am also practicing drawing Japanese (Anime drawings)

I’m glad that you are trying out anime drawings; it’s always a good thing to try plenty of different art styles. When I find out about new ones, I’ll tell you about them.

  6. Dear Mr.Pahl,
I loved the Native American salmon art because they all were so unique and beautiful in their own way. I want to have more time in art with Mrs.Heywood because I love to remake stories, art, and culture from the distant past! Maybe the modern styles of art today will become old-fashioned in the distant future.
    Sincerely, Fiona

    1. Dear Fiona,
I agree to that all of the class art was very unique. I loved all of the different designs that the class used for their Native American salmon. The part I like was when we all had fun coloring our salmon and when we all had a fun time as a class together.
      Sincerely, Dyna

  7. Dear Mr. Pahl, I think that was a really cool and fun art project because it’s interesting to learn about the Native American culture. For me it would be hard to carve that into a huge piece of wood then paint it with paint that was made with berries, rocks, and bark. I bet it took them a long time to finish one totem pole. 2. Those were well drawn salmon pictures and the children really captured the Native American symbol's. It's fun to learn about cultural History, and it's even funner to learn through the study of art. Good job Rhiannon!

    2. Dear Mrs. Heywood,
I was doing art when I was very little (but only some types of art). I think now I have been doing much more variety of art because you started coming in our class and because my dad introduced me to different kinds of art. I thought it was very fun and a bit difficult doing these salmon drawings but I enjoyed it all the same. Thank you.
      Sincerely,
      Phoebe

  17. Dear Mr. Pahl,
I think that our designs where much like Native American art and at the same time very unique to Native American art, wich made the drawings a great example of Native American art and modern art at the same time.
    Sincerely, River.

  18. Dear Class,
What I learned from this project is the art style of the Native Americas. I learned about it a little in 3rd grade and Ms. Van Etten talked about it a lot, but never really about their art form. So in this project I really learned about their art form. Thank you Mrs. Heywood!
    Sincerely,
    Karoline
