This link gives a rich and detailed explanation of some of the concepts, shapes and symbols our students learned. Scroll down to page 20 to read about salmon.
Below you'll find an Animoto of the students' learning and work process, followed by a Kizoa of their finished products.
Has learning about the shapes and symbols used by Pacific Northwest Native Americans affected how you look at their art and cultural artifacts in our community?
Dear Class,
ReplyDeleteI loved it when we did that project! It was so fun and everybodys looked different. They were very good and creative!
Sincerely,
Karoline
Dear Karoline,
DeleteI think that your drawing of the salmon was wonderful. I also agree with you that everyone’s art is different but there all creative.
Sincerely,
Phoebe
Dear Karoline,
DeleteI also thought it was fun making these. I also thought they were creative and that every ones looked different. By the way is yours in the video?
From, Gavin
Dear Class,
ReplyDeleteIt was so fun making these. I can,t Believe that we did these just a couple weeks ago. I love how we did the project it in small parts, so that making them would last a while.

DeleteDear Cathy,
DeleteYou're welcome. I am glad you had fun. The results are terrific, too. Wait until you see our next project!
Mr. Pahl (with an "h")
Dear Mr. Pahl,
ReplyDeleteIt was very fun making these because I thought trying a new kind of art instead of the art we normally do is really fun. Can we do more of this kind of thing?
Sincerely,
Sophia
Dear Sophia,
DeleteYou're welcome. I am glad you are getting so much art this year. Art is really important. We are lucky to have Mrs. Heywood, Jo, and Ms. Avera who know art so well. Yes, we will have art at least once a week for the remainder of the year.
Sincerely,
Mr. Pahl
Dear Sophia,
DeleteYou are right. It is so fun doing an art stile that we do not do often. I also think that we should do more stuff like this.
From, Gavin
Dear Sophia,
DeleteI agree your to what you think. Drawing different art makes it fun instead of drawing American drawings all the time. I am also practicing drawing Japanese (Anime drawings)
Sincerely,
Alvin
Dear Alvin,
DeleteI’m glad that you are trying out anime drawings; it’s always a good thing to try plenty of different art styles. When I find out about new ones, I’ll tell you about them.
From,
Sophia
Dear Room 12 students, I love your artwork! The colors and shapes in the salmon represent our surroundings in such a beautiful way. Great work! Sincerely, Tara (Fiona’s mom)
ReplyDeleteDear Tara,
DeleteThank you for the complement. I had a lot of fun making these fish even if it was a challenge, and I do agree I love my artwork. I also think everyone else’s art work it great too.
Sincerely,
Phoebe
Dear Mr.Pahl,
ReplyDeleteI loved the Native American salmon art because they all were so unique and beautiful in their own way. I want to have more time in art with Mrs.Heywood because I love to remake stories, art, and culture from the distant past! Maybe the modern styles of art today will become old-fashioned in the distant future.
Sincerely, Fiona
Dear Fiona,
DeleteI agree to that all of the class art was very unique. I loved all of the different designs that the class used for their Native American salmon. The part I like was when we all had fun coloring our salmon and when we all had a fun time as a class together.
Sincerely, Dyna
Dear Mr. Pahl, I think that was a really cool and fun art project because it’s interesting to learn about the Native American culture. For me it would be hard to carve that into a huge piece of wood then paint it with paint that was made with berries, rocks, and bark. I bet it took them a long time to finish one totem pole. From, Julia
ReplyDeleteDear Mr.Pahl, I liked the salmon drawing videos because the affects where like none I had ever seen before.
ReplyDeleteSincerely, River.
Dear Mrs. Heywood and Jo,
ReplyDeleteThank you for doing art with us. It was fun. You take time to come to are class room on your own time thank you.
From, Rhiannon
Dear Rhiannon,
DeleteWhy did you think it was fun? I thought it was fun because we were doing something different.
From,
Sophia
Those were well drawn salmon pictures and the children really captured the Native American symbol's. It's fun to learn about cultural History, and it's even funner to learn through the study of art. Good job Rhiannon!
DeleteRhiannon's Aunt Aliishea Flook
Dear Mr.Pahl
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed drawing the salmon. It was really fun to do. And I would like to do art every day.
From, Cathy
Dear Jo and Mrs. Heywood ,

From, Gavin
Dear Class Room 12 Students, the art work each of you created is beautiful! All unique with different colors and shapes. It's wonderful to hear how much all of the students enjoyed this project. Sincerely, Patricia (Phoebe's Aunt)
ReplyDeleteDear Class Room 12,
ReplyDeleteI loved watching the slideshow of all your art. The music was really cool. I loved that I could see the salmon in each picture and that I could see all of your individual personalities in your artwork. Keep up the good work!
Sincerely,
Holly (Ella's mom)
To all the artists in Room 12,
ReplyDeleteI'm so impressed with your salmon drawings! You should be proud of your work. It's a pleasure to come into your class and work with all of you. I hope what you've learned in class inspires you to create more art at home.
See you again soon,
Mrs. Heywood
Dear Mrs. Heywood,
DeleteI’m also impressed with how great all of the artwork room12 made too. Also, I’m so thankful that you teach us art because you tell us about great art styles. I can’t wait until we can do another project!
Sincerely,
Sophia
Dear Mrs. Heywood,
DeleteI was doing art when I was very little (but only some types of art). I think now I have been doing much more variety of art because you started coming in our class and because my dad introduced me to different kinds of art. I thought it was very fun and a bit difficult doing these salmon drawings but I enjoyed it all the same. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Phoebe
Dear Mr. Pahl,
ReplyDeleteI think that our designs where much like Native American art and at the same time very unique to Native American art, wich made the drawings a great example of Native American art and modern art at the same time.
Sincerely, River.
Dear Class,
ReplyDeleteWhat I learned from this project is the art style of the Native Americas. I learned about it a little in 3rd grade and Ms. Van Etten talked about it a lot, but never really about their art form. So in this project I really learned about their art form. Thank you Mrs. Heywood!
Sincerely,
Karoline
Dear Mr. Pahls Class,
ReplyDeleteI really liked the salmon drawings they’re very pretty. My favorite is the jumping one with big teeth
Sincerely, Gurshaan (Devin little brother)
Dear room 12,
ReplyDeleteI remember when we did that. It was fun. I learned new shapes that I had never heard of. I liked it because I like salmon and salmon are cool.
