Our First Nutrition Class

Mara, Common Threads Farm Garden Educator visited us today for our first nutrition class!

Today's lesson was focused on identifying and labeling plant parts, naming the parts of different plants we eat, preparing a special vegetable "burrito," and using observations to describe foods we eat rather than sharing our opinions about taste.

What are fruits we eat?
What are flowers we eat?
Leaves?
Stems?
Roots?

Now it's time to classify these plant parts. Are they seeds, roots, stems, leaves, flowers, or fruits?

Now the REALLY fun part begins. Let's prepare a special "burrito" using ONLY parts of plants to make it!

Yum! Shredded apples and beets, chard stems, kale or lettuce leaves and...sunflower seed butter! They were (mostly) a hit.

Thank you Common Threads Farm for choosing us to be one of the schools you work with. We really value the service you provide our children and our community.

Please comment!

What is something you learned today about plant parts or eating plants?

What are your favorite plant parts to eat?

What are kinds of flowers, seeds, roots, stems, leaves we eat?

What observations can you make about food textures and tastes (instead of saying "I like that food" or "That's gross!")?

  2. Dear 4th graders,
I like to eat the fruits because they are sweat and sour at the same time I only ate the kale and the sunflower seed peanut butter. Because I’ve tasted beat and it tastes like over roasted broccoli.

  5. Dear viewers,
I think it is a good to have nutrition in my class because not only that it’s good for you, you can also learn more about food and healthy living and try food you never tasted before or try new recipes.

  6. Dear 4th grade,
Some flowers we eat are maybe hibiscus because in California we eat the nectar from the hibiscus. Where we get the nectar is from the pistil in the middle of the hibiscus. Hibiscus is very sweet in California because there is a lot of sun and water from a house or a hose would be fine to water the hibiscus.

Eating healthy food is great for you. Its good for your body because It will give you energy and be stronger and if you eat a lot of healthy food . You should not eat juke food everyday because you might get fatter everyday. Today I learn that we can eat steam and leaves too.

  13. Dear Everyone,
Sunny Land 4th graders are every lucky to have a Nutrition class. Because we are the one of the 4 schools that only have a Nutrition class. And if we don’t have a Nutrition class we won’t have a chance to learn and try differed food to eat and try. And we get to learn differed parts of a plant and learn that we eat way differed kind of food and that we eat flowers, roots, leafs, fruit, and the stems. There are so many learning kids can learn so I believe that all schools should have Nutrition class.

  23. Dear 4th graders,
We did a great job organizing the parts of a plant. It was a little hard because we didn't know what some of them are, but we learned what they were!
