Amazon River |
Katie, who loves to swim, was reading about how dangerous it is to swim in the Amazon River. The Amazon River is home to snakes, eels, alligators, and attacking piranha. Katie's teacher saw what she was reading and asked Katie, "What river contains about the same volume of water as the Mississippi, the Yangtze, and the Nile rivers combined?" Katie's teacher told her that it is the Amazon River. The Amazon is the biggest river in the world and has a drainage area of 2,722,000 square miles. If the Mississippi River had a drainage area that was exactly one-third the drainage area of the Amazon River, what would be the Mississippi's drainage area to the nearest tenth of a square mile? Hint: Break 2,722,000 into 3 equal parts to get the answer. |
